Google “Comparison” Units Get New Look; Change Highlights Paid Inclusion In Some Vertical Search Areas

Google has had what it has called “comparison ads” for some time, but these comparison units are getting a new look in Google’s search results beginning today. Google hopes the change will better explain to searchers that comparison listings come from companies it has a commercial relationship with. It also highlights how three Google search products now seem to largely operate on a paid inclusion basis. Google was once a vocal opponent to paid inclusion programs.

Sega’s Toylet Turns Urinals Into Gaming Systems [VIDEO]

A new video game system from Sega takes playing video games while you’re in the bathroom to a whole new level. Called Toylet, the urinal-mounted game system not only has you play games while you’re in the bathroom, it’s powered by urine.

Rather than use a traditional controller, the gaming system has a sensor that measures the volume and pressure involved in your…flow, and uses that to control a game. Games are less than a minute and are displayed on a small eye-level screen. Not exactly a video game system for the kids, games involve doing things like filling a coffee can or blowing wind up an animated reporter’s skirt.

BlackBerry Music Gateway: Streaming So Simple Your Grandma Could Do It

blackberry-music-gateway-600To kick off the annual BlackBerry World trade show, Research In Motion unveiled a gadget, the BlackBerry Music Gateway, that bridges your phone with your stereo. Just pair your BlackBerry (or competing handset) via Bluetooth, and you’ll be quickly streaming music to whatever audio system it’s connected to.

Wait, pairing? Isn’t that why Bluetooth streaming hasn’t really taken off? Actually, it’s more complicated than that, but never fear: RIM has made the pairing simple by using yet another wireless technology: near-field communication (NFC).

Will Hulu Soon Require a Cable Subscription? Probably Not

The battle between TV Everywhere and online streaming is getting more intense, amidst reports that Hulu will soon require a cable or satellite subscription to access the latest network content.

Right now, users can access many shows from ABC, NBC and Fox on Hulu.com the day after the episodes air on broadcast television for free. Last fall, Fox started limiting next-day access to its most popular prime-time offerings. Although Dish Network, Verizon and Hulu Plus subscribers can still access next-day offerings, free Hulu.com users or Fox.com users need to wait an additional eight days.

Big Jambox Pumps Out Awesome, Ear-Splitting Audio [REVIEW]

Ever since Jawbone introduced the first Jambox wireless speaker, people have wondered when they would introduce a larger model — one that could pick up with audio where the diminutive Jambox leaves off. Jawbone heard that steady drumbeat and has answered with the pricey, but extremely effective Big Jambox Bluetooth wireless speaker.

Why would you need a larger Jambox? To be honest, I wasn’t sure either. I own the original Jambox and love it. It fills my office with music or the most recent NPR audio cast. It’s small enough to fit neatly into my backpack and travel to and from work. It handles calls as well as it does audio, announcing when I have an incoming call and letting me conduct it through the device’s build-in speaker phone. I always thought the sound was pretty big for such a small device.

AdWords “Rotate Evenly” Setting To Stop Rotating After 30 Days

google-adwords-square-logoThe “rotate evenly” setting on an AdWords campaign has been a long-time best friend to habitual ad testers testers and landing page tweakers everywhere.  Next week, the “rotate evenly” setting will stop rotating after 30 days and default to a different setting, “optimize for clicks.”

Three settings currently exist:

  • Rotate evenly
  • Optimize for clicks
  • Optimize for conversions

The “rotate evenly” setting has been the preferred type for achieving apples-to-apples testing as ads were evenly disbursed at all times.   The change will now require users who are using ads to test landing pages or copy-based conversions to be limited to 30 days per trial.   Each time creative is enabled or edited the 30-day window will restart over again.

Watch 4 iPhones Perform ‘We Are Young’ [VIDEO]

It took 238 takes to make this video, which features video on four synchronized iPhones. We think it was worth the effort.

The iPhones are coordinated to a guitar version of Fun’s “We Are Young” by YouTube user MysteryGuitarMan. Among the cool images: The moon passing by, the Earth and the sun and MGM himself starting and ending the tune.

All of the images are very impressive. But as the comments note, it’s possible that the effects were achieved by less labor-intensive means. (MGM could not be reached at press time for comment.)

7 Real Mobile Duplicate Content SEO Issues

Ask someone who’s new to mobile SEO about it and they’re almost sure to tell you that mobile sites are duplicate content. The fear is that having the same content on two URLs will do the same thing it does in traditional SEO and split link equity and social shares, making it more difficult for either page to rank.

In reality, with Google’s Old Possum/Skip Redirect update in December, user agent redirection is all that’s necessary for mobile sites to rank ahead of desktop sites in smartphone search, even if it’s the same content formatted differently.

Grandma Dies 6 Times in Ad, but it’s for a Good Cause [VIDEO]

A grandmother dies six times — in increasingly violent ways — in a new ad for an Argentinan jobs site called Zonajobs. But it’s all for a good cause, or rather for a good joke.

The ad, from agency Draftfcb in Buenos Aires, is one where you spend the first three quarters wondering what the hell is going on. When the punchline finally lands, you may not only laugh, but think a little as well. In other words, it’s pretty much everything you want in an ad. That is, unless you’re sensitive about this subject — even when it’s blatantly fake. In that case, it’s pretty much unwatchable.
