'Black Friday' and Canadian shoppers

‘Black Friday’ and Canadian shoppers

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - We’re hours away from one of the biggest shopping days in the U.S…’Black Friday’, where lineups full of bargain-hungry shoppers will form outside of many American retailers.  Many of the shoppers will be Canadians, and we asked a well-known marketing expert about whether the trip south for Black Friday is actually worth it.

We’ve all experienced the Boxing Day let-down, expecting those stellar sales only to find big discounts on a few things.  SFU Consumer Affairs economist Lindsay Meredith says you can expect the same south of the border, with retailers offering a few of what he calls ‘loss leaders’.  “Do shoppers eventually start to figure this out?  Of course they do and eventually what that means is the ‘Boxing Day’ sales don’t have the same impact they used to have.  People are getting wise to the whole idea.”

Meredith says doing your homework online before the big shopping trip can help you identify the ‘loss leaders’ at different stores, so you can get in on the deals and avoid the duds.

While the Canadian dollar is near parity now (between 94 and 95 cents US), you’ll still be paying duty on your purchases if you don’t stay overnight.  Personal exemption rules at the border require at least a 24-hour stay, which would leave you coughing up cash for a hotel room.

Then come the question – It is worthy going to shop in USA for the Black Friday or not?
