- Seattle to Amman, Jordan – $586 roundtrip after taxes

^^ Yes, it’s the Treasury from Indiana Jones.
There are some really crazy prices out of Seattle to Amman, Jordan (AMM) at the moment. And on a really nice airline too (Emirates). Definitely an amazing deal for anyone looking for an exotic trip.
For comparison, the cheapest flights out of Vancouver to Amman are about $1500. Even for out of Seattle, this is over 50% cheaper than usual.
Here are some example searches on Kayak…
IMPORTANT: After selecting a fare on Kayak, do not pick ‘Airfare.com’ to be taken to for booking. They are a terrible booking site. Even though the price on Emirates.com will show as $1700ish, choose that. When you actually go to Emirates.com the price will drop, Kayak just doesn’t have their prices cached correctly yet. You can also click through to Orbitz, and that will work fine too (price will also drop). Just avoid Airfare.com.

- Does Colombia scare you? $477 USD roundtrip after taxes
So I found a flight to Bogota, Colombia (BOG) for $477.50 roundtrip after taxes that leaves in April of 2012. Over 55% cheaper than the cheapest flights to Colombia usually cost, and probably the cheapest flight to South America I’ve ever seen from Vancouver.
When you hear ‘Colombia’ it’s hard not to think of the stereotypes: drugs, kidnappings, crime. But when you actually do the research, the dangers seem to be more cliché than reality.
The more I travel, the more I find that the reputations of ‘dangerous’ places have been greatly exaggerated, usually from people that have never actually stepped foot inside the country.
Anyways, this deal just made me think about whether or not I would be afraid to visit Colombia. I think perhaps earlier on in my traveling days it would have been a destination that I would have been a little scared to to visit. Not so much now. In fact, I’d probably go just to see this crazy, multi-colored river (Cano Cristales)…

For anyone else out there that wouldn’t be afraid to visit Colombia, here’s how I found it.
1. Do a search from Vancouver to Bogota, Colombia (BOG) from April 21 to 29 on Kayak.
http://www.kayak.com/flights/#YVR-BOG/2012-04-21/2012-04-29
2. Click on the price and select CheapTickets.com (owned by Orbitz). When you get to CheapTickets.com, the price drops slightly.

- Vancouver to Lima, Peru – $738 roundtrip after taxes
There are some flights to Lima that are about 25-30% cheaper than they ever normally get from Vancouver.

They seem to be available sporadically throughout the first part of 2012. The latest ones in the year I can find are near the end of May. A 3 day flexible date search on Kayak is the best way to find them.
Here’s May 20-30 for example, which involves the long weekend, so that’s one less vacation day to use.
http://www.kayak.com/flights/#YVR-LIM/2012-05-20-flexible/2012-05-30-flexible
The price verifies on both Orbitz and CheapTickets (which is owned by Orbitz). But if you try Orbitz, the first time you click through it may say ‘unable to confirm your selection’, and then you have to click on ‘Select’ again, and it will verify.
Flights to Belize also look to be down to $558 roundtrip after taxes. Here’s one in February for example…

- Vancouver to Guangzhou, China – $492 roundtrip after taxes
There seems to be some *very* cheap flights to Guangzhou, China showing on Vayama.ca at the moment, particularly for September/October 2012 travel.

Here’s how to find them…
1. Go to http://www.vayama.ca
2. Search for a trip from Vancouver (YVR) to Guangzhou, China (CAN)
Many date combinations in September/October seem to be giving this extremely cheap price. Try September 14 to 28 for example.
3. Hit Search. Depending on the dates you choose, you may see multiple itinerary options. Many of them seem to involve direct flights on the way back to Vancouver, but on the way there the options often look to involve spending a night in Los Angeles.
Or there’s some that involve getting into Los Angeles in the morning and departing at 11:30 PM the same day.
The price verifies on Vayama, here’s a screenshot:

I’ve been able to find cheap ones involving pretty much any date in September/October
If you’re wondering what China Southern is like as an airline, they actually have a 4 star rating over at Skytrax.
As for Guangzhou, it’s the 3rd largest city in China, 180km from Hong Kong, and Vancouver’s sister city. Other than that, I have to admit, I don’t know a whole lot about it. Somebody educate me.

- Huge fare war from Vancouver to Amsterdam – $608 roundtrip after taxes – affecting fares up to May 2012
There’s a huge fare war to Amsterdam (AMS) going on at the moment. You do see the occasional charter flight on Air Transat to Amsterdam that drops down to this level, but it’s extremely rare to see many of the major airlines drop a price to Europe like this that affects such a large range of dates.
They look to have dropped the price of most flights that occur between now and mid-May 2012.

Here’s how to find them…
1. Go to http://www.kayak.com
2. Do a 3 day flexible date search for a roundtrip flight from Vancouver to Amsterdam that occurs between now and May 15, 2012.
3. The airlines involved in this fare war appear to be Air Canada, United/Continental, Lufthansa, American Airlines, and possibly others. Some of the flights have good routings, some don’t.
What you want to do after your search on Kayak is click on the dropdown menu beside ‘Sort’ and choose ‘Duration (short to long)’.
Next, you’ll want to use the price slider on the left hand side and bring it down to $650 or so. Now you’re looking at the fastest flights that are under $650 roundtrip after taxes.
Here’s an example search in April 2012 to get you started:

Of course you can also use this as a ‘gateway’ flight to get somewhere else cheaply in Europe. Plenty of low-cost carriers have flights from Amsterdam.

- Expedia promo to Vegas. Not as interesting as last year, but still interesting.
Those of you that have been following my posts for nearly a year might remember the Expedia flub last November that lead to packages to Vegas for as cheap as $19/person after taxes & fees for flight + hotel packages from all across Canada.
Unfortunately, Expedia didn’t make the same mistake this year, but they do have a pretty interesting promo out at the moment where you can get $200 back on packages to Vegas, in the form of a pre-paid Mastercard that they send you in the mail.

Here’s the link with the details:
http://www.expedia.ca/p/promos/sale-vegas-baby.htm
It really only gets interesting on packages that are 6 nights (or more) where they’ll send you a pre-paid Mastercard for $200 *after* your travel is completed.
Let’s say you’re a couple heading to Vegas. Each of you could book a package separately and each receive a $200 card.
Here’s an example from Vancouver:
1. Go to http://www.expedia.ca
2. Select ‘Flight + Hotel’. Change the number of adults to ’1′. Search for a package from Vancouver to Las Vegas from November 30 to December 6. Hit Search.
3. Sort the results by price. What you’re looking for now are the packages that are valid for you to receive the $200 pre-paid Mastercard from Expedia. You can find those by looking beside the green ‘Expedia Extras’ icon.
Here’s an example:

Do you see where it says ‘Book now and receive a $200 prepai…’ ? This means the package is valid to receive the $200 pre-paid Mastercard from Expedia. You can look for other hotel packages that have the same message.
So essentially, the package is now costing you $286 after taxes for flight + hotel. ($486 – $200). That’s assuming the pre-paid Mastercard is as useful as cash to you when it arrives. (It can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted)
Your partner or friend could now do the same thing, booking their own package for one person to the same hotel on the same dates, and receiving $200 back as well. You end up with 2 rooms, but that’s fine, you just don’t check in to one of them. No, the hotel doesn’t care, they’ve already been paid by Expedia. You just make their life easier, it’s one less room to clean. Or you can go ahead and check in to both rooms if you want, it doesn’t matter.
In fact, you don’t need to check into the room at all, and can just use this as a cheap flight to Vegas. Again, using just the flight portion of your package and ditching the hotel is completely fine. Nobody says you *have* to check into your hotel when buying a package.
What made the deal so great last year was that it was $300 off (per person) with no minimum number of nights required to get those savings, and the savings were instant rather than having to wait for them in the mail. Alas, no such luck this year.
But still, for someone looking for a cheap package to Vegas from Vancouver, or even just a cheap flight to Vegas (via a package) this could definitely be worth a look.
Also to note is that this offer is available if you’re flying out of Bellingham. It looks like it brings down 6 night packages to as cheap as $119/person after taxes for flight + hotel. If you’re going to do that though, you should also compare what you find on Expedia to what you can find through Allegiant Airlines (not searchable on Expedia)

- Vancouver to Kauai, Hawaii – $368 roundtrip after taxes
(sorry about the missing ‘v’ in the e-mailed deal alert, not sure where it ended up)
There’s a few freak fares to Kauai, Hawaii (LIH) from November 30 to December 4, 5, or 6 that are down to $368 roundtrip after taxes.
Kauai is usually a little more expensive to get to than Honolulu, and tends to bottom out at around $500-$550 roundtrip after taxes for the cheapest flights. So this one is about 25-30% cheaper than it ever usually gets.
Kauai is also one of the most beautiful places on earth. Try this Google image search if you don’t believe me.

Here’s a search on Kayak you can use to find this fare..
http://www.kayak.com/flights/#YVR-LIH/2011-11-30-flexible/2011-12-07-flexible
Note that when you click on the price to take you to the fare, you should probably use CheapTickets.com (owned by Orbitz, same company). If you click on United.com you’ll find that United doesn’t take Canadian credit cards (unless you manually input your dates at United.ca)

- Vancouver to Istanbul, Turkey – $676 roundtrip after taxes. Greece $729.
There’s a very interesting unadvertised sale going on with Delta at the moment, to many cities in Europe that never usually go on sale.
The fares to Istanbul, Turkey (IST) stood out to me the most, because fares to Turkey tend to bottom out at about $1150 roundtrip after taxes. So this is a good 40%+ off the usual lowest price.

Here’s an example search in November/December…
http://www.kayak.com/flights/#YVR-IST/2011-11-21/2011-12-05
screenshot:

Something to note is that Delta’s fares on Kayak appear to be coming up cheaper when you *don’t* use the flexible date search, so pick specific dates.
I would focus on Mon/Tue/Wed flights, as they seem to be the cheapest. I’m not sure exactly how large a date range has been affected, but would start by focusing on November/December. They do seem to have dropped for early 2012 as well though.
Athens, Greece looks to be down to $727 roundtrip after taxes, which is again, about 40% cheaper than it ever normally gets to.
example search to Athens:
