Steven P. Jobs, the Apple Inc. chairman and co-founder who pioneered the personal-computer industry and changed the way people think about technology, died Wednesday at the age of 56.

His family, in a statement released by Apple, said Mr. Jobs “died peacefully today surrounded by his family.”

The company didn’t specify the cause of death. Mr. Jobs had battled pancreatic cancer and several years ago received a liver transplant. In August, Mr. Jobs stepped down as chief executive, handing the reins to longtime deputy Tim Cook.

“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being,” Mr. Cook said in a letter to employees. “We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.”

Jon Montgomery is a solid contender in the men’s event after sweeping the training runs at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Hollingsworth, 29, is coming off a stellar World Cup season in which she reached the podium eight times in nine starts, capturing the World Cup season title for the second time in her career. She won a pair of races, placed second in another two, and finished third on three occasions.

The Eckville, Alta., native also won the World Cup title in 2005-06, taking bronze at the Torino Olympics along the way. That was Canada’s first-ever medal in skeleton, a sliding sport that was dropped from the program following the 1948 Games before reappearing in 2002.

Hollingsworth was the fastest athlete in the training sessions held Monday through Wednesday. She posted the best time in five of the six runs, and finished third in the other.

Teammate Amy Gough of Abbotsford, B.C., also looked strong, winning one run and finishing second in two others. Michelle Kelly of Fort St. John, B.C., had a third- and a seventh-place showing on the opening day before finishing outside the top 11 in the other four heats.

Gough was ninth in the World Cup season, while Kelly was 13th.

1. Day 1: Opening ceremony. Odds are good they won’t top Beijing’s, but it will be worth seeing how they’ll light the Olympic cauldron in a domed stadium.

2. Day 2: Women’s moguls. Jenn Heil won Canada’s first gold medal of the Games four years ago in Turin and will go for a rare repeat at Cypress.

3. Day 3: Women’s super-combined: The national alpine team has been hit by injuries, but Emily Brydon of Fernie, B.C., has a shot at the podium at Whistler.

4. Day 4: Men’s 500-metre speedskating. Is there anyone in Canada who doesn’t want to see Jeremy Wotherspoon cap his comeback with a gold medal?

5. Day 5: Men’s short program, figure skating. He’s the poster boy for McDonald’s, and skated onto the world podium last year, but can Patrick Chan withstand the pressure?

6. Day 6: Men’s halfpipe, snowboarding. Canadians will have it tough, but led by American Shaun White, this is a cool sport to watch.

7. Day 7: Women’s 1,000 metres, speedskating. Christine Nesbitt has been chased all season and could launch the individual performance of the Games with strong results here.

8. Day 8: Skeleton. The men went 1-2 in Turin four years ago and both the men’s and women’s teams have a shot at replicating that feat at Whistler.

9. Day 9: Short track, men’s 1,000 metres. One, it might just be the most exciting Winter Olympic sport. Two, Charles Hamelin could challenge Christine Nesbitt for most medals won by an individual athlete.

10. Day 10: Ski cross, men. Led by Chris del Bosco, the men swept the podium at an Olympic test event at Cypress last year.

11. Day 11: Ice dance, free dance. Serious medal potential in Canadians Tessa Virtue, making a comeback from leg surgery, and Scott Moir.

12. Day 12: Ski cross, women. They didn’t sweep the podium in the test event at Cypress, but they did finish first and second. More medals, anyone?

As the Olympic torch relay gets closer and closer to Vancouver, the No. 1 question for Games watchers is:

Who will light the Olympic flame at the opening ceremonies?

We asked Province readers, and four names came to the fore: Betty Fox, Trevor Linden, Rick Hansen and Wayne Gretzky.

Betty Fox — the mother of Canadian icon Terry Fox, the one-legged Marathon of Hope runner — has a Facebook page devoted to promoting her as the Olympic flame-thrower, and she’s a B.C. local. On the downside, she’s not an athlete and not well-known internationally.

Former Vancouver Canucks captain Trevor Linden is a good choice from a Vancouver perspective, as a local legend and former Olympian who devotes time to charitable causes, but outside of hockey circles, his low profile may hinder his hopes.

Wheelchair athlete and advocate Rick Hansen wheeled around the world for charity, and has made the world a more accessible place for those with disabilities, so his credentials probably fit the bill.
