How to Build an Active Community in Social Media

Emma-Julie Fox writes for Pitstop Media Inc, a Vancouver company that provides SEO services to businesses across North America. If you would like to invite the author to write on your blog too please contact www.pitstopmedia.com

Do you have an active community in social media? Are you just starting to build one? Or are you trying to revive one? Whatever you’re trying to accomplish, it goes without saying that an active social media community is essential to social media marketing success. Bear in mind, though, that building an active social media community cannot be done overnight. It requires time and commitment, and necessarily begins with building strong relationships that make it a lot easier to manage communities. The relationships you need to build as an SEO company has to be anchored on trust and the kind of trust that can be built only when you’ve proven yourself valuable to your target audience.

It’s only available in the United States at the moment. If you’re not logged into Netflix, you’ll be asked to do so before proceeding to the stream. And not every Cage film is available to watch — just those on the streaming site.

Twitter Killing TweetDeck for iPhone and Android

Twitter will shut down multiple TweetDeck apps to focus on the product’s web-based version, the microblogging service announced Monday.

In yet another sign of the battle between social media’s two biggest players, Facebook integration will be removed, too.

The announcement was met largely with a chorus of “nooooooooo,” “whyyyyyyy” and “gaaaaaaaah” on social media, reflecting TweetDeck’s widespread popularity with hardcore Twitter users.

TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for iPhone and TweetDeck for Android will be removed from their respective app stores in May, and stop working soon after, according to a TweetDeck blog post.

Cooking App Picks the Perfect Spices for Your Meal

Do you have a cupboard full of spices but no clue what to use them for? Hold the salt and pepper. A cooking app inspired by a Cincinnati grandmother might just help you kick your recipes up a notch.

For years, grandson B.P. Storn, of Cincinnati, Ohio, used an herb wheel his late grandma gave him. The wheel matches the best herbs to season a dish you might be cooking up for breakfast, lunch or dinner — making for quite the handy cooking companion. For example, if you’re preparing chicken, the wheel might recommend using rosemary, oregano, garlic, basil and tarragon.

Twitter vs. Instagram: The Showdown in an Infographic

It’s been three months since Instagram killed support for Twitter cards, yet we still regularly hear complaints about the newfound hassle in tweeting your ‘grams: “Tragic,” the chorus goes. “So lame.”

Until early December, Twitter users could view Instagram photos within Twitter itself thanks to the microblogging network’s media-friendly expanding content cards. Then one day, they couldn’t — having instead to perform the arduous task of clicking an outbound link to the Facebook-acquired Instagram’s still relatively new website. So, while you could still technically share Instagrams to Twitter, the experience was drastically altered.

This Mediocre House Party Will Have You Screaming ‘Meh’

Can one big party really change everything?

If you have a fake Hawaiian driver’s license with the name “McLovin” on it, then maybe. But any other circumstance? It’s probably a long shot.

Woodhead Entertainment released a hilarious parody video of two high schoolers’ attempt to throw an epic “We’re-only-young-once!” party before they graduate and move on to college. Unfortunately, the shindig turns out to be painfully (and realistically) average.

The video might hit a little close to home for some. It does, however, bring to mind an important motto: Sometimes it’s okay to be just okay.

From hactivism to the flipped classroom, the Internet has sparked an online revolution with digital tools.

Not only has the World Wide Web assisted in shaping our political persuasions, but also our personal interests. While there are 139,500 professional photographers in the U.S., Instagram rekindled the snap-happy side of everyone, with 90 million active users each month on the social platform.

Watch This Robot Figure Out How to Fly By Crashing

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” seems to be the motto of a flying robot that picks itself back up after crashing into surrounding objects.

Called the AirBurr, the bot is equipped with a unique “Active Recovery System,” enabling it to withstand collisions, relaunch and continue flying.

Researchers at EPFL, a Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, were inspired to create the AirBurr after observing the way insects move.

“Even though they manage to avoid most obstacles, they still manage to fly into windows and fly into walls — yet it’s okay; they don’t break,” said project leader Adam Klaptocz. “They fall to the ground, they get back up again and they keep flying.”

Artist Embarks on Quest to Photograph All 788 of His Facebook Friends

For many, Facebook has become a messy, unorganized jumble of close friends, casual acquaintances and people you really have no business being connected to but are too polite to delete.

Connecticut artist Ty Morin, however, is on a quest to make his friend list come to life. He plans to track down all 788 of his Facebook friends in person, one by one, then photograph each person doing something meaningful to them.

He says it’s more than just a fun adventure, though — it’s also an effort to reclaim some of the human connection lost in an increasingly digital world.

The Evolution of a Coffee Addict

It started with one cup when you were 17 years old. You probably didn’t like the bitter taste, but you just needed a boost to finish that sociology paper before your 8 a.m. class.

Nowadays, you finish your second cup of coffee before even stepping foot into the office. (Or maybe you’re on a whole new level, like this this guy who ordered a $50 Starbucks drink.)

In the comic below, H. Caldwell Tanner of Loldwell maps out the Pokémon-inspired evolution of a coffee addict. Are you still in the Roastyke stage, or a full-on Brewking?

Venture Capitalist Tip: Shake Up Traditional Markets

Shervin Pishevar is a serial entrepreneur and venture capitalist at Menlo Ventures, where led the investments in Uber and Tumblr. He also works closely with portfolio companies Shaker, Warby Parker and Mr. Number.

On this episode of Revolution, Pishever talks about innovation in traditional markets. The behind-the-scenes impact of Uber on the taxi industry and AirBnB on the hospitality trade are just two examples he uses.

As Pishevar notes, transparency is the foundation for innovation. “We are in living in an age where everything is transparent,” he says. “Corruption and the old ways of doing things can no longer be hidden under the carpet, in alleyways. People are shining the light. When you’re in the light, it’s hard to be dark.”
