UPDATE: September 9th – Take this blog post, and substitute the city of New York for Philadelphia (PHL) or Charlotte (CLT) on United. They’ve dropped their prices to those cities down to about $329 roundtrip after taxes, across the board, throughout 2011 and 2012.

Update Sep 8: For those that missed the United drop, Delta seems to have responded with massive cuts of their own, down to about $370 or so.
Delta’s cuts seems to have impacted flight prices up to about mid-May of 2012 with a large variety of dates available. And then in June there are some cheap ones, but with less dates available.

Same goes for July 2012, cheap ones are out there, but less dates available…
Don’t see anything for August.

United just made a huge unadvertised price cut on their flights to New York’s LGA (Laguardia) airport. Typically, the bottom price from Vancouver to New York sticks around $550 roundtrip after taxes. So flights that are 35% cheaper than that bottom are definitely notable.
They seem to have dropped a large range of flights, from now all the way up until May 2012. There’s also some in June/July of 2012 for $40 more.

Here’s an example search in May 2012…

But try a flexible date search in any month and you should see something.
There’s even a decently priced one ($427) over the Christmas holidays New Years…

How long will this cut last? As always, it’s impossible to say. In my experience, unadvertised fare drops on United typically last about 24-48 hours at most.

What you fail to mention is that there is a stop-over on these cheap flights. Lame.

So fly direct on Cathay Pacific for $657 if a stopover irks you. Nobody’s stopping you.
